FAQ

The basics

What is Riverton Mutual Aid?

A grassroots, volunteer-led network dedicated to building community resilience through solidarity, not charity. Our mission is for every neighbor to have access to the resources, support, and care they need, by fostering a culture of reciprocal aid and collective care.

What is our guiding philosophy?

Solidarity, not charity. We work with our neighbors, not for them. There is no hierarchy between giving and receiving help. We promote resource-sharing and solidarity-building over philanthropic or for-profit solutions.

Purpose and goals

What is the core purpose of the group?

To bridge the gaps left by systemic inequities and traditional social services. That means facilitating resource-sharing, building community power, and fostering social connection to combat isolation.

What does the group commit to?

  • Direct aid distribution. Consistent systems — a community fridge, a tool library, grocery delivery — to meet immediate needs.
  • Skill-sharing and education. Workshops on practical life skills: urban gardening, home repair, navigating paperwork.
  • Crisis response. A rapid-response network for emergencies — extreme weather, public health, economic hardship.
  • Advocacy and awareness. Identifying and organizing around local systemic issues like housing insecurity and food deserts.
  • Inclusivity and accessibility. All aspects of the group accessible — including to non-English speakers and people with disabilities.

Operations and principles

How are decisions made?

Democratically. Volunteers and neighbors collaboratively decide how the group is organized and how to care for the community.

Are there any requirements or barriers to receiving aid?

No. No means-testing, no documentation requirements, no judgment. Aid is for whoever needs it.

What is the group's stance on privacy?

The principle of autonomy means we respect the privacy and agency of every neighbor involved, and the need to protect vulnerable people in our community. On this website, that means no analytics, no trackers, no sign-ins.
